NORTH FORK ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE ANNOUNCES

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH FOR NEW RIVERHEAD SHELTER

The North Fork Animal Welfare League will hold a press conference on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 10 AM at the Henry Pfeifer Community Center at EPCAL to officially launch the Riverhead Shelter Campaign, a capital campaign to raise funds needed to relocate the Riverhead Animal Shelter to a new space within the Town. Expected at the press conference are: Town of Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter, the entire Riverhead Town Board, leadership of North Fork Animal Welfare League and other invited guests.

“We are delighted to launch this campaign for the animals and residents of the Town of Riverhead.” stated Gillian Wood-Pultz, Executive Director of the League.  She went on to say, “Everyone at the League, both staff and volunteers, is thrilled to know that when the project is complete, the animals of the Town of Riverhead will have a truly exceptional place to stay while they wait for a family.” The new Riverhead Town Shelter will be a model shelter for the region as well a New York State and the country, with an energy efficient design that is bright, airy and accommodating for the animals in the League’s care as well as the surrounding community. It will be clean, spacious and state-of-the-art, with indoor and outdoor areas for dogs and cats. Areas for animal intake, family bonding, humane education, storage and administration will make the space more functional.

The campaign is expected to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the renovation of the proposed site at the Henry Pfeifer Community Center. A bequest from the Troxel Family provided a significant portion of the funds needed for the renovation along with the construction of an indoor/outdoor dog pavilion.

The current shelter, which has been under the management of North Fork Animal Welfare League since early 2013, is a decades old building in great disrepair, located next to a garbage dump and waste processing plant. The shelter is poorly lit and ventilated, and lacks sufficient space for the animals in the League’s care, as well as for staff, volunteers and visitors. There is no space to care for cats, though there are many in need of a safe home while awaiting adoption. No amenities exist at the current location for exercise or socialization of the animals, nor is there a safe place for walking dogs outside the building. There is no room for humane education or training volunteers.  Although the League has made upgrades to the current facility, they are not sufficient for the long term.

Media are invited and encouraged to attend the press conference on Tuesday, September 8th at 10 AM.  The Henry Pfeifer Community Center is located at 4062-602 Grumman Blvd., Calverton, NY.   Media inquiries regarding the campaign should be directed to Tammy Severino, Capital Campaign Director, (631) 834-1990 or [email protected].  For general inquiries about the North Fork Animal Welfare League or the Riverhead Shelter program, please contact Gillian Wood-Pultz, Executive Director, (631) 765-1811 or [email protected].

The North Fork Animal Welfare League is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide humane care and treatment for all of the animals needing protection in our community. Never is a healthy, adoptable animal killed for the sole crime of being homeless. Spay/neuter and humane education are two of the most important tools utilized in the fulfillment of our mission. There Is No Shelter Like a Humane Community.
