PRESS RELEASE

On Tuesday, August 6th , the Riverhead Town Police will participate in the 36th Annual NATIONAL NIGHT OUT.  We are asking area residents to observe this night as America’s night out against CRIME.  NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to do several different things: 1. Heighten crime and drug awareness. 2. Generate support for, and participate in, local anti-crime programs. 3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. 4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods   are organized and fighting back against crime.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT will officially kick off with a 2:00 PM Riverhead Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, August 6th, where the NATIONAL NIGHT OUT poster contest winners will be recognized.

During the early evening hours, The Riverhead Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will be visiting neighborhood watch groups that participate in NATIONAL NIGHT OUT block parties.

Give-aways sponsored by the Riverhead Police Department Crime Prevention Unit and a visit by McGruff the Crime Dog are always a highlight at these block parties.

We are asking neighborhoods to hold front porch vigils by leaving your lights on between 7:00 and 10:00 PM and join your neighbors in a variety of events such as block parties, cook outs, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs.

Please call the Riverhead Town Police Crime Prevention Unit at 631-727-4500  x273 or email Cheryl Behr @ behr@townofriverheadny.gov to find out what we can do to help make NATIONAL NIGHT OUT a special one in your community or if you would like information on how to establish a Neighborhood Watch Team in your neighborhood.
